Eucharistic Minister Instructions

q       Arrive 15 minutes early.  Go to the Sacristy.  Check your name off on the schedule in order for the captain to know that you have arrived.

q       The “Captain” gets the Tabernacle key, goes to the Tabernacle and determines the number of consecrated hosts in the tabernacle.  Genuflect after opening the doors and before closing the doors.  (the new ciborium will hold 175 hosts and the bowl will hold 200)

q       Prepare Ciborium (bread) and flagon (wine - fill to the top of the flagon) for the Offertory.  Place on the back credence table.  Make sure nothing else is on that table.

q       Place large host on the paten and place both items on top of the large chalice.  These go on the credence table in the Sanctuary.  Place two pewter cups and one host bowl on that table also.

q       Place 4 purificators on the Altar.  After the 10:30 mass, any unused purificators should be put away.

q       The “Captain” makes assignments, makes replacements for “no shows.”  Please be sure to find a replacement for yourself  if you cannot attend the mass for which you are scheduled for.

q       Light the candles on each side of the ambo and the two on the altar.

q       Ask a family to bring up the gifts.  If there is an usher at that mass, let him know who will be bringing up the gifts.

q       During the Sign of Peace, the “Captain” goes to the Tabernacle, opens the door of the Tabernacle, genuflects, removes the Blessed Sacrament, leaves the Tabernacle door open, and brings the Blessed Sacrament to the front center of the Sanctuary.

q       During the Sign of Peace, the other three Ministers have gathered in front of the Sanctuary (leaving room for Fr. Roger to return to the Sanctuary) and allow the person holding the Blessed Sacrament to go before them.  As the “Captain” ascends the steps of the Sanctuary, the other three bow profoundly and then, too, ascend the steps into the Sanctuary. Do not bow or genuflect if you are holding the Precious Blood or Body of Christ.

q       The “Captain” walks in between the Ambo and Altar (Father Roger steps back) and places the Blessed Sacrament on the Altar.  All Ministers walk to the left of the Altar (Ambo side.)  Ministers distributing the Precious Blood will approach Father as he hold out the cups.  The cup should then be offered to the other two ministers before offering to the altar servers.

q       Communion is then distributed, first to the Ministers and Altar Servers, the Congregation, and then the Music Ministry.

q       The Ministers stand in front of the Congregation in this order:

Body of Christ   Precious Blood   Body of Christ   Precious Blood   Body of Christ

                                                      (Father Roger)

q       The small section near the Chapel receives Communion before the “wing” section.  Those parishioners may return to their seats by walking in back of the Eucharistic Minister.

q       When Father has finished breaking the Eucharist into the ciborium, approach the altar to receive his ciborium and return to the Tabernacle to combine the remaining Eucharists into a host bowl.  (The ciborium should not be placed in the Tabernacle).

q       The Ministers who distributed the Body of Jesus bring their host bowls to the tabernacle, combine the Blessed Sacrament, place the Blessed Sacrament in the Tabernacle, genuflect, close the doors.  Bring the empty Ciborium and host bowl into the Sacristy and purify.

q       The Minister of the Precious Blood go into the Sacristy, consume the Precious Blood, and purify the cups.  Use a dish towel to dry each item (not a paper towel as it will scratch, nor the used purificator).  Place used linens in the mesh bag under the sink.

q       Return to your seats.  Bow if you pass in front of the Altar; genuflect if you pass the Tabernacle.

Additional Reminders:

q       If consecrated wine should spill on the floor, lay your purificator over the spill, go to the altar to get another purificator, and return to your place.  Try to stand in front of the spill in order to prevent anyone from walking on the spill.  After you are done serving the parishioners, you should then get a clean, wet purificator to wash the floor where the spill is.  (The purificator should remain over the spill until the floor has been washed.)  All three purificators are then to be placed in the mesh bag for cleaning.  If you are among the congregation and are aware of the situation, please feel free to help.

q       If consecrated wine should spill on your clothing, you should soak your item of clothing in a bowl of water before regular laundering.  The bowl of water should then be poured into the ground.  If the wine should spill on the clothing of the person receiving, simply tell that person to see you after mass (at which time you will instruct he/she how to launder the clothing).

q       If a Eucharist should fall on the floor while serving, you should pick it up and consume it yourself.

q       If a parishioner tries to dip their Eucharist into the wine before consuming it (intinction), you should cover your hand over the cup and simply say "I will be glad to serve you after you have consumed the Eucharist".

q       If you should ever need to bring the Eucharist to the sick, leave a pyx on the altar.  (The pyx is located in the locked cabinet in the sacristy).  Father Roger will place the host in the pyx.  You may pick it up directly after mass from the Tabernacle along with a purificator.  You should go directly to the recipient's home.  Before distributing the Eucharist, a reading should be read first.  (In the locked cabinet in the sacristy you will find a blue handbook "Communion for the Sick" as well as typed instructions on the procedure for bringing Communion to the sick).
