Holy Cross / Shaw’s Bread Program

Holy Cross and Shaw’s Bread Program began in 1993. Shaw’s donates baked goods. Holy Cross volunteers deliver the baked goods to local food pantries, soup kitchens, retirement homes and senior programs including Meals On Wheels.

Our 48 volunteers have made approximately 2,000 deliveries in just over 5 years. This effort has provided approximately 150,000 loaves of bread to Derry recipients. This bread helps them stretch their fixed incomes. In some cases, such as the soup kitchens and the food pantries, this bread helps those who need it most.

It is easy to see the deep appreciation felt and shown by the recipients! There are few community services that provide so much reward for little invested time.

Here’s how the program works.

• Volunteers sign up by sending an email message or by signing a form on the sign up table at one of our Masses. The we need your name, phone # and the day(s) you are available.

• As current volunteers leave the program replacements are called from this list.

• Each volunteer delivers bread once every two weeks. You will receive a calendar, which identifies the day and the delivery location. (Another volunteer does the alternating week.)

• Bread is picked up at Shaw’s between 7:00-9:00 AM. It is already bagged and is in a cart at the Bakery. You just have to ask for it.

• You take the bread and deliver it.

You do this every other week. It just takes 10-15 minutes. Our current volunteer replacement list is down to two volunteers and we need more new people.
